Alamogordo MainStreet's Historic New York Avenue 1200 Block

In the early to mid-20th century, the 1200 Block of New York Avenue was more than just a stretch of road—it was the epicenter of Alamogordo’s social elite. Through the 1950s, this block housed some of the city’s wealthiest families, whose stately homes and businesses reflected the prosperity brought by railroads, agriculture, and the eventual burgeoning military presence at nearby Holloman Air Force Base. These families helped shape the civic and economic identity of Alamogordo, and their legacy still echoes through the architecture and stories embedded in the block.
Nestled in the Alamogordo MainStreet District, the 1200 Block of New York Avenue stands as a living testament to Alamogordo’s early 20th-century vision. Conceived around 1900 as the new mixed residential and commercial zones of a newly founded city, of Alamogordo; New York Avenue was more than a street—it was a statement.
Anglo entrepreneurs by the names of Watkins, Charles Bishop Eddy, Joseph Eddy, and others drawn by the promise of railroads and extractive industries, laid the foundation for a Northeastern-style town in the heart of the Southwest.
New York Avenue quickly became a hub of commerce and community. Buildings like the First National Bank at 928 New York Avenue (now Roadrunner Galleria) anchored the district with architectural flair and financial ambition. That bank housed four safes, including a Mossler art deco safe that cost $36,000 at the time—equivalent to over $1.2 million today. New York Avenue was considered the Main Street. The 900 and 800 Blocks were the commercial blocks with banking and shops, the 1000 Block hosted the Courthouse, the 1100 Block hosted the fairground pavilion which would later become city hall, the 1200 Block would eventually host luxury homes and in more modern times professional businesses.
As the construction crews recently unearthed old iron pipes and original foundations during the makeover of the 800 and 900 blocks of New York Avenue whispers of Alamogordo’s past have grown louder. Local lore suggests that spirits of the district’s founders still linger in the rafters and stairwells from the 900 Block to the 1200 Block with buildings dating back to the early 1900's.
Legends of “Judy,” believed to be the ghost of a descendant of bank president Henry John Anderson, "Willie" and ghosts of the Holloman's roam the avenue. Store owners have reported mysterious movements of bells and falling candle holders, adding a layer of mystique to the streets historic charm.
Ghost tours and history a walk hosted by AlamogordoTownNews.org journalist and historian, Chris Edwards, bring these stories to life, offering visitors a chance to experience the district’s rich tapestry of characters—from saloon keepers to spiritual seekers.
Today, New York Avenue from the 800 Block to the 1200 Block is undergoing a vibrant renaissance. Monthly walking tours, art installations, and community events like “Christmas on MainStreet” breathe new life into its historic storefronts and businesses located within the district. The Flickinger Center on the 1100 Block, once a movie theater, now hosts live performances, while local shops offer everything from handcrafted goods to New Mexico, artisan delights and Primitive and Americana Home Decor.
This stretch of New York Avenue the 1200 Block area is more than a destination—it’s a cultural corridor where past and present meet. Whether you're drawn by the architecture, the legends, or the lively events, the 1200 Block invites you to explore, connect, and celebrate Alamogordo’s enduring spirit.
Today, the 1200 Block of New York Avenue has transformed into a dynamic corridor of professional services, creative enterprise, and community engagement. While the grandeur of its past remains visible in its historic facades, the block now pulses with new energy:
The 1200 Block of New York Avenue is more than a business district—it’s a gathering place. Events like Christmas on MainStreet, monthly salons and lectures, and historical tours breathe life into the area, drawing locals and visitors alike. The block’s partnership and participation as a part of Alamogordo MainStreet reflects a broader movement to preserve Alamogordo’s heritage while embracing innovation and inclusivity.
